About Monikker

Monikker playing to a sold out crowd at Granada Theater

Monikker recorded her first rap “Energized” at the age of 16 in a cellist friend's basement…

In her hometown of Marshall, TX… a small North East TX town with about 25,000 people.

Back then, she went by the name of “Domino Effect.”

It was as weird as you think:

She rapped about Mozart getting down on the front row of her show…

She didn't know anything about getting beats off the internet…

And her friend didn't produce drums…

So he tapped on the back of his cello for the beat.

Soon, Monikker discovered a reggae band named “Domino Effect…”

So she briefly changed to the name “Effusion” before looking up the definition of “moniker.”

That's when she read this description of “moniker” on the internet that would change everything:

"The word ‘monicker’ or more rarely, ‘monikker’ (among clowns, most often intentionally 'misspelled', with a 'c') in accordance with clown tradition that some words are inherently funny (and hence to be preferred over 'unfunny' words) has been widely embraced by the ‘clown world’ as equivalent to a stage name or pseudonym."

Some words are inherently funny… like “wordplay” in rap… hmmm…

Monikker's dry wit and fierce sense of humor often shape the ironic contrasts in her lyrics.

This sense of humor in hip-hop & rap is as rare as the spelling of “monikker” itself.

Since those days in the fresh piney woods of East Texas where “Domino Effect” became “Monikker...”

She's finely tuned her "formula" of '90s lyricism channeled through a 2020s soundscape.

Expect boom bap, trap, remixes, familiar samples, and diverse flows.

Monikker is currently based in the Austin, TX area.
