[New] Review: Doug G - CMPLXCTY EP

Doug G releases his brand new CMPLXCTY EP. It's a high quality hip-hop record that leaves rap fans wanting more. Doug shows off his skills as a talented record producer & dope East Coast lyricist. The New York native brings an authentic, soulful boom bap flavor to his records. Fueled by the success of the EP's first single, "Complex City," Doug releases the EP and announces the second single as "Never Say." It's a personal anthem in line with the EP's overall concepts of standing strong & leaving limits behind as illusions.

CMPLXCTY's production is cohesive yet also encourages a sonically rich & diverse environment, such as the guitars in new single "Never Say" or the brilliant, bluesy arrangements on "Halfemptyhalffull" featuring guitarist Robert Rosenthal. Lead single "Complex City" features soulful, R&B guest vocals from Miranda Capanelli over a groovy boom bap production. The synth-y, darker electronic "Modern" is a head-nodding, energetic rap joint.

Lyrically, it's clear that Doug G is on an intellectually higher ground of wisdom than most of his peers. "This is grown man rap, watch who you worship/it ain't swag if you gotta tuck your skirt in, it's a/circus of pure shit, all these clowns with these/tricks like they workin the churches, you purchased some/worthless trash..." he raps in "Modern."

The lone track not produced by Doug himself, and also the final track on the project, "Good Days," is an electronic rap production with bluesy piano parts. Doug G calls people out on their bullshit & demands a higher standard for us to reach our best versions of our selves. "Back in the good days where we would say what's really on our minds," he reminisces of the times before social media & instantaneous contact via computers & phones. The track closes a unified project that begs the listener to think higher & try harder to be better. It's not preachy, it's inspirational & meaningful.

Overall, CMPLXCTY feels like fresh air in an often stagnant genre - both musically & lyrically. Doug is clearly at his best on this record as a smart & creative artist. When can we get more? Read more about Doug G, his background, influences, & commentary from the artist.
