Monikker reviews top rap & hip-hop from August 2015.

Lyrics

What’s up y’all, it’s the end of another hot August for me here in Texas. Welcome to Episode 2 of Monikker’s Rap Show. I’m your host Monikker & I’m ready to talk about some of the great music from the past month.

Dr. Dre’s Compton was easily the biggest rap event of the month. Unfortunately though, none of the platforms I use to hear and download music include Apple Music or iTunes yet, so I will not be playing Dr Dre in this podcast.

But that’s ok since I can highlight some other music that may have been overshadowed by Compton.

The format for these end-of-the-month podcasts will include clips from each song, with only my #1 pick played in full. I do it this way so you guys can get a taste of each song, and if you dig it, you can go listen to the full song. I’d rather do it that way instead of playing each song in full and making the podcast longer. Please give me feedback on this format though, especially if you don’t like it.

So let’s get it started with #5: Rapsody got some love last month with a remix of “Don’t Need it” featuring a new Joey Bada$$ verse. She also had a feature on the new Dr Dre album. Her new album Beauty and the Beast was released earlier this year. Popular hip-hop blog DJ Booth.net put her on their list of 10 more rappers who might blow up in 2015. Here’s Rapsody with the “Don’t Need It” remix.

#4 Andy Mineo dropped the title track to his Sept 18th release “Uncomfortable.” It’s been a top iTunes song download in August. Later in the month, he posted his Speechless announcement, which was a short video of him announcing his next single - in sign language. That’s right - I think you really need to see this video. A few days later, he dropped the new song “Hear My Heart,” which is a poignant note to his deaf sister named Grace. My tweets on Andy Mineo have gotten an insane amount of clicks - more than any other rapper I’ve been talking about. You may not have heard of him before, but ladies and gentlemen, here is Andy Mineo.

#3 Mac Miller also had a great month, releasing “100 Grandkids” and doing a slew of interviews. His new album releases on Sept 18, the same day as Andy Mineo’s. After the passing of Sean Price, he also posted a previously unreleased track with a Sean Price feature. This is Mac Miller featuring Sean Price on “Pet Sounds.”

#2 Underground Mississippi heavyweight Big KRIT has had new music lately. “86” puts his love for his car on display - in classic Big KRIT fashion. This makes me think of his 2012 debut, Live From the Underground. It’s a great song and free download on his SoundCloud page - which, by the way, has been in the August news for talking business about licensing with Universal Music. SoundCloud users may be headed for big changes. What y’all think? For now you can enjoy Big KRIT’s free download on SoundCloud. Here’s 86!

#1 Sean Price of Heltah Skeltah passed away and left us with his music archives. He was getting ready for the release of his new mixtape Songs in the Key of Price, which Duck Down Music went ahead and released. We’re left with the last work from an iconic & celebrated hip-hop master. The mixtape is short and phenomenal. Before its release, fans got a taste of the new sounds with “Planet Apes.” This is my #1 hip-hop moment from August 2015.
