Dave Fol's new song is weird and a reality check, but only for the real. Any song named "Netflix and Chill" screams to me that it's likely to be an exploitation of the popular phrase - one with a completely shallow meaning. Netflix and chill means...girls are gonna come over and get down, just like that. No questions asked, no effort, no strings attached.
But this song is the opposite. Dave Fol's "Netflix and Chill" is, according to him: commentary on the absurdity of the "Friend Zone," the neediness bred out of canned interactions, and the lazy expectations that men have about women they are interested in.
I'd say that's a pretty good description. Louisiana rap artist Dave Fol has low, growling, menacing vocals. It's a trippy song - a slow, get your purple drank lean on, I'm-not-joking kind of song. Organ keyboard parts juxtapose a slow trap beat. It's an interesting song. I think hip-hop could use more artists like Dave Fol.
